Americans Are Donating to Help Those Affected by the Crisis in Ukraine

Americans are responding generously to the humanitarian crisis resulting from the February 24 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Less than three weeks after Russian forces crossed the border into Ukraine sparking a humanitarian crisis on a scale not seen in Europe since World War II, a national survey by Fidelity Charitable found fully a quarter of Americans had already contributed money or other forms of aid to help meet the humanitarian needs of Ukrainians. Of those who had not donated, two out of three said they plan to make a contribution in the next few weeks.

During the same period, Fidelity Charitable, a leading national sponsoring charity for donor-advised funds, also reported an 83% increase in donor grants directed toward international affairs compared with the same time period a year ago. It also found that charities working directly to assist those affected by the crisis were the clear charities of choice for holders of Fidelity Charitable donor-advised funds.

While it is still unclear how much Americans will ultimately contribute to help the millions of people affected by the crisis, the large-scale immediate response revealed by the Fidelity Charitable survey suggests giving could reach levels not seen since disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and 9/11.
